New Trailer For Pacific Rim
Director Guillermo Del Toro‘s homage to Japanese monster movies comes into clearer focus in the latest trailer for Pacific Rim, debuting at this week’s WonderCon.
This sneak peek includes a clear mention of “Kaiju,” the Japanese term for giant monsters like Godzilla (literally, “strange beasts”). Del Toro had already stated that he wants the movie to be “a beautiful poem to giant monsters.”
I, for one, certainly think a monster having its skull crushed with a cruise ship is beautiful poetry. But so is watching Charlie Day rant (clean-shaven!) because no one will listen to his science-guy solution when they could just blow things up; and so is whatever Ron Perlman is doing in that outfit.
(Perlman, of course, is a Del Toro favorite from Hellboy.)
Another random observation: the narrating pilot (Charlie Hunnam) referred to the robots as “The Jaegers.” Just hearing the name, I assumed it was a reference to Chuck Yaeger, the real-life test pilot who became the first person to break the sound barrier; but the spelling on a title onscreen suggests its a reference to the German herbal liquer? (I can’t wait for a pilot in the movie to yell, “Get some Red Bull, ‘cuz it’s time for a JAEGERBOMB!” before blowing away a kaiju.)
What do you think of the latest trailer?
