Chris Kelly, one-half of the hit 1990s rap duo Kris Kross, was found dead inside his home in Atlanta yesterday. He was just 34.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1,” Kelly’s mother Donna Kelly Pratte said in an official statement issued by The So So Def Family. “To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris—the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”

According to Investigator Betty Honey of the Fulton County Medical Examiner‘s office, Kelly was found unresponsive Wednesday evening and was later pronounced dead at the south campus of the Atlanta Medical Center at around 8 p.m.

Nicknamed the “Mac Daddy,” Kelly burst onto the music scene in 1992 alongside bandmate Chris Smith, nicknamed “Daddy Mac.” Their hit single “Jump” off of their debut album Totally Krossed Out, skyrocketed up the charts, not only in the United States, but around the world. It eventually went multi-platinum. Known for wearing their clothes backwards, Kris Kross later toured with Michael Jackson and even starred in their own video game. Discovered by Jermaine Dupri in an Atlanta mall, the duo reunited earlier this year for the So So Def 20th Anniversary Concert.
Upon hearing the news, R&B singer Monica wrote on Instagram, “RIP Chris Kelly. May the peace of God comfort your family & all of those who love u…” Added rapper Da Brat via Twitter, “REST IN PEACE TO MY LIL BRO CHRIS KELLY OF KRIS KROSS. Dam wasn’t we JUST at rehearsal and doin a So So Def20 show?”

R.I.P Chris Kelly, you will be missed.

  • The main character is a man named Daniel. When you look at his eyes, you’re looking into the eyes of a man who has seen Hell. There are moments when he looks like he’s about to begin screaming at any second, and never stop. The first time you see this is in episode one, when he’s about to leave the prison. The guard is treating him like a human being, and it’s evident this hasn’t happened in an extremely long time. You see the confusion on his face as he wrestles with suddenly being treated decently by the same people who have treated him like an animal for years. He can’t quite process it. I know that look well. As he’s about to leave the prison, the guard helps him tie his necktie, as he can no longer remember how to do it himself.
