Isn’t It Time For The Washington Redskins To Change Their Team Name?

Submitted by on May 5, 2013 – 11:36 amNo Comment

For years now, people have complained about the Washington Redskins team name. Why? Well, maybe you’ve gotten used to it or desensitized to it. But the term “Redskins” is offensive to Native Americans. If a sports team was trying to come up with a name in 2013 and someone suggested “Redskins,” they would probably be fired on the spot. And yet, Washington, D.C.’s NFL team continues to use it simply because it has been their name for so long. They’ve tried to change it on several different occasions now. But they haven’t been able to land on another name that works. So they’ve stuck with Redskins, despite the fact that it’s a terrible representation of what the organization is all about. It’s actually pretty damn disgraceful that a pro sports team in our nation’s capital uses something so offensive for their team name.

With that in mind, it’s time for a change. And D.C. Council member David Grosso has proposed one. He wants the ‘Skins to change their name to the Redtails—a nickname that was given to the Tuskegee Airman who flew in World War II and broke the color barrier for military pilots. He’s written up a resolution to get the name changed and calls the name Redskins “racist and derogatory” in it. The only problem? It seems as though he’s fighting a losing battle. That’s because most people in this country actually like the team name Redskins and don’t mind if Washington continues to use it.

That’s right. According to a recent poll, almost 80 percent of Americans don’t think the Redskins should change their name. Further, eight percent of people aren’t sure about what the ‘Skins should do. So only 11 percent feel a change is in order. Eleven percent! I have to say, I’m sort of surprised by that. In this day and age, it seems the term “Redskins” would be offensive to most people. Yet, this poll suggests otherwise. And, as a result, it’s unlikely that the ‘Skins will turn into the Redtails anytime soon.

Where do you stand on the issue? Are you with the 80 percent of people who don’t mind the Redskins keeping their name? Or, do you think they should change it ASAP? Let us know below. And keep a close eye on what Grosso is doing in D.C. It’ll be interesting to see if the Redtails name ever gets off the ground.
