Zach Galifianakis Loses On SNL’s “Game Of Game Of Thrones”

Zach Galifiankis returned to Saturday Night Live this week for his second go at hosting. And despite his hilarious absurdist monologue, a Jennifer Aniston look-alike contest with his Hangover co-stars Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper, and a foul-mouthed Martha Stewart on Match.com, the most buzzed-about sketch is the game show “Game of Game of Thrones.”

Galifianakis plays a contestant who is dressed as a dragon and thrilled to be answering questions about everyone’s favorite HBO fantasy series, but gets an unexpected challenge instead.

While I’m sure Duncan could tell you exactly how many hairs are in Eddard Stark’s beard, he is stymied by questions about worlds other than Westeros and Essos- namely, our own. He identifies a picture of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as an “old pilgrim,” and isn’t sure what year it is (though he knows it’s in the 2000s).

I hope Game of Thrones fans take this sketch with good humor. It’s really not them- they’re standing in for any fanatic who knows more about a mythical world or subculture than the world around them (I’m looking at you comic book fans, Trekkies, and even rabid sports fans). But Thrones certainly is the obsession of the moment.

Also, SNL seems to like game show sketches that mock both the contestants and the rigged set-up. A few months ago, an all-black panel was unable to distinguish Dylan McDermott from Dermot Mulroney, and even Mulroney himself was confused. (And Bill Hader played the host there too. But then again, he and Taran Killam play everything on SNL these days.)

What did you think of “Game of Game of Thrones?”
