Basketball Wives LA Star Laura Govan Burns A Wedding Dress For The Single Ladies

Basketball Wives LA star Laura Govan isn’t putting too much emphasis on the word “wife.”

The VH1 reality star has ignited quite the controversy after setting a wedding dress on fire for a photo shoot with Black Mens Magazine. The mother to four children with her NBA baller fiance Gilbert Arenas says the flames represent her fiery passion against societal perceptions that married women are more valuable then single ladies.

“I just don’t like the way the public perceives women who aren’t married vs. the way they perceive women that are,” she revealed. “People place so much value on having a great wedding instead of having a great relationship; that’s why you see people get married and divorced so quickly. I’ve been with the same man for 12 years, we have four children and we’re happy. Focus on that.”

Govan also hopes that people will finally focus on her and not the title before her name. “For me burning the dress in the photo was my way of re-introducing myself; for many people my name is synonymous with Basketball Wives and although that’s part of me, it doesn’t define me,” she said. “I just felt like, ‘Let’s start fresh. Hi. My name is Laura Govan, ignore the BS you think you may know and get to know the real me.’”

While she may not be a big fan of marriage, Laura will ironically appears as a bridesmaid for The Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes when she re-marries her ex-husband Gregg on the forthcoming spin-off series, I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding.

Do you agree with Laura’s thoughts on marriage?
