The team behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are back for their hotly anticipated third film together, The World’s End. The movie follows five old friends reuniting for a legendary pub crawl in their hometown- when they realize they are instead fighting for their own survival.

Stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, director Edgar Wright, and producer Nira Park worked together on the hit UK show Spaced before making Shaun and Hot Fuzz. They refer to these films as the “Three Flavours of Cornetto Trilogy,” after the popular British ice cream snacks, and perhaps making fun of Krzysztof Kieślowski‘s higbrow Three Colours film trilogy. One flavor of the ice cream has appeared in each film.

But the movies have more in common than that: each is a careful (and so far hilarious) parody of- and homage to- a specific genre (zombies films, super-cop films, and alien/disaster films, respectively). What’s more, all seem to involve the takeover of an otherwise idyllic town by monstrous hordes, and all center around pubs.

Each film even features a gag about jumping over fences. (Thank you, Reddit.) And each movie has featured fan favorite Martin Freeman in increasingly large roles.

In this case, the first trailer suggests that World’s End might have more in common with alien invasion movies than Apocalypse movies. While the two certainly aren’t mutually exclusive, I feel like Invasion of the Body Snatchers is in a different genre than nuclear/epidemic/natural disaster movies.

And this time, Pegg seems to be more of the schlubby loser- usually that role is reserved for Frost. It looks like Pegg’s character never really moved on from adolescence, while all his friends became wealthy businessmen. Wright is excellent at layering a lot of heart and human elements into his action films, and I can’t wait to see how this one plays out.

What do you think of the first look at The World’s End?
