As Olivia Pope on the hit ABC series Scandal, Kerry Washington makes the problems of her clients disappear. But the 36-year-old actress certainly isn’t going anywhere.

From her breakout role in the teen film Save The Last Dance opposite Julia Stiles to her most recent role as a slave desperate to be reunited with her husband (Jamie Foxx) in Django Unchained, Kerry has always made a lasting impression and Hollywood has finally gotten the memo. Wearing a cute cardigan and plaid shorts by Marc Jacobs, the stylish star graces the front of Elle‘s June 2013 issue, making it her very first major fashion magazine cover.

“I’m the luckiest broad in Hollywood now,” Kerry said of her success in the past year. “To be the lead actor on Scandal and to be in the highest-earning Tarantino movie—I don’t get to ask for more.”

Despite being one of the most in-demand names in the business, Kerry never imagined she’d be the toast of Tinseltown. ”I imagined I’d be a clinical psychologist, with a focus on how performance shapes identity,” she told Elle. “I’d figure out ways to use role-playing in the healing of people.”

Slipping into high-fashion threads by Giambattista Valli, Georgio Armani, Balmain,Tom Ford and more for the June editorial, the star has learned to love the perks of her trade which includes getting ready for red carpet events.

“I found out I enjoy the process,” Washington confessed. “All these people show up at my house, they all have kits, someone has dresses. And it’s like, Let’s have fun. It’s not all about me. We’re able to create stories on the red carpet.”

The June issue of Elle hits newsstands on May 21st. Go behind-the-scenes of Kerry’s shoot with Elle below and garner more info on her in her interview here.
