The Boston Marathon Organizers Are Making The Best Of A Very, Very Bad Situation

Submitted by on May 20, 2013 – 12:01 pm2 Comments

Right now, there are a whole bunch of people out there who can’t wait for the 2014 Boston Marathon. And by “a whole bunch,” we mean more than 5,600 runners who were unable to complete the 2013 Boston Marathon because of the tragic bombing that took place. They can’t wait to get back to Boston next May to run in the marathon again. And, late last week, the organizers of the Boston Marathon announced that they will be doing something very special for all of those runners who failed to cross the finish line in 2013. They will be inviting all of them back to Beantown to take part in the race again in 2014. And this time, they are going to see to it that they get the opportunity to finish the Boston Marathon.

“The opportunity to run down Boylston Street and to cross the finish line amid thousands of spectators is a significant part of the entire Boston Marathon experience,” Boston Athletic Association executive director Tom Grilk told the Boston Globe on Friday. “With the opportunity to return and participate in 2014, we look forward to inviting back these athletes and we expect that most will renew their marathon training commitment.”

Although it’s not going to make for an ideal marathon setting—by inviting all 5,600 runners from 2013 back to the 2014 Boston Marathon, the streets of Boston will literally be packed with runners—this is the right thing for the BAA to do. It will help the city of Boston continue to work through their grief associated with the 2013 Boston Marathon, and it will show the rest of the country (and the rest of the world!) that Boston is stronger than ever.

If you ran in the 2013 Boston Marathon and didn’t get a chance to finish the race, will you be going back in 2014 to finish what you started? Let us know in the comments section below. Either way, the 2014 Boston Marathon is already guaranteed to be one of the biggest national events of 2014. Go circle it on your calendar now.
