Windows 8.1 To Bring Back The Start Button

Never fear, Windows fans: you’ll get your start button back.

Microsoft had already announced an upgrade to the widely unpopular Windows 8; and uncharacteristically, they are offering Windows 8.1 to current Windows 8 users completely free.

Then this week, blogger Paul Thurrott revealed a leaked screenshot (above) of a new Windows desktop clearing showing a Start button in the traditional place in the lower left hand corner.

Microsoft cut the famous Start menu (and Start button) from Windows 8 to force users to utilize the new Live Tiles of the Start screen, a customizable feature meant to appeal more to mobile and touchscreen users, and newer sensibilities of computing. But despite any advantages, users still missed the ease of the Start menu, especially when already on the desktop screen.

Thurrott also reported that Windows 8.1 will allow users to boot directly to desktop, bypassing the Start screen, though this feature will not be turned on in default.

Are you a Windows 8 user? What would you think of getting your Start button back?
