Google Bans Porn On Glass

Just hours after a company unveiled the first porn app for Google Glass this week, Google quietly released new content policies banning adult material on the augmented reality spectacles. The move is another awkward step as Google tries to define the device before it even debuts.

MiKandi, a maker of successful adult apps for Android, released their app called “T**s & Glass” on Monday morning. The app reportedly allows users to view explicit images and video; and the company had plans to set up live webcam interactions between users as well.

According to a blog post from CEO Jesse Adams, the app’s homepage almost immediately received 10,000 unique visitors and a dozen users signed up (warning: some NSFW images on the MiKandi site). But the development team quickly realized that their program was no longer allowed on Glass, despite careful planning:

When we received our Glass and started developing our app 2 weeks ago, we went through the policy very carefully to make sure we were developing the app within the terms. We double checked again last week when making the site live on the Internet and available for install for testing during last week’s announcement. We were not notified of any changes and still haven’t been notified by Google. We also double checked our emails to see if any notifications of policy changes were announced, but we haven’t found any such emails.

Google Glass’ Developer Policies note at the very bottom that they “may be revised from time to time without notice.” I guess they really meant that.

This comes just after Google banned facial recognition software from the new device. The fast-changing policies, as well as the negative attitudes Glass is already inspiring, give the impression that intended use and public perception of the device is getting away from Google before Glass has even fully formed and been released.

What do you think of Glass’ new policies?
