It wasn’t love at first sight for Alicia Keys and her now-husband Swizz Beatz. The Girl On Fire singer graces the July 2013 cover of Marie Claire’s U.K. edition and reveals that her relationship with the super-producer was luke-warm at first.

“Honestly, I didn’t really like him that much. I thought he was too ostentatious,” the 32-year-old confessed of her husband of three years. “Swizz will have the fastest car, the biggest jewelry, the loudest jacket; everything with him is really over the top. I used to see him and think, he is so annoying.”

Eventually, the two did strike a hot connection and their love even inspired a song on Keys’ latest album. “’That’s When I Knew’ is definitely an ode to my husband,” Keys confessed to Marie Claire in the middle of the U.K. leg of her “Set the World on Fire” tour. “I think we’ve taught each other a lot. He’s taught me to live more fully and I think I’ve taught him to live more deeply.”

Besides her husband and her adorable son Egypt, Keys also revealed her new passion. “I fell in love with directing,” she said. “Because first of all I didn’t have to get up early for make-up and, second, I’m a very diplomatic individual.”
