Lily Collins knows how to talk the talk. But she also wants to make sure she looks good when she walks the walk. Heralded as “The Leader of the New Hollywood Girl Pack,” the 24-year-old actress shows some of off her favorite footwear, wearing a Dior graphic-print bustier and matching skirt, on the cover of the July issue of Glamour. And her passion for fashion doesn’t stop there.

“Even in L.A., where everyone’s in yoga pants, I’ve never been the girl to run around in sweats,” she says. “I love fashion and always have something put together, but I won’t wear anything specifically to be photographed in. I have become more cautious of making funny faces in public.”

Inside the “Next Big Thing” issue, Lily opens about famous friends, a chance encounter with fashion dynamo Karl Largefield and admits why she never asked her father, superstar musician Phil Collins, to help her make it big. “I always wanted to do it on my own,” Lily confesses when asked if her dad helped break down any barriers for her in Hollywood. “I never wanted anyone making phone calls. A name can open doors, but there’s a quote I like: ‘Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open.’”

Despite her dad’s famous connections, Lily admits she’s more likely to call on her mother for help. “It has nothing to do with acting,” Lily notes. “She guides me through my personal life, telling me to experiment. She lets me borrow her vintage. She has Chanel and eighties stuff from Yohji Yamamoto and Vivienne Westwood that she got when vintage wasn’t cool. She’d wear them to events with my dad, and everyone would ask what she had on; when she said ‘vintage,’ they’d go, ‘Oh, that’s nice,’ and, you know, turn the corner.”

That familiarity with Chanel came in handy when the actress happened to bump into Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld in Paris. “We’d met briefly before,” Lily said of the chance encounter. “I was shopping at Colette when he just walked in and said, ‘Ah, Lily!’ Karl Lagerfeld in Paris. Epic.”

Also expected to be “epic” this summer is the highly-anticipated sci-fi film The Mortal Instruments which is expected to do for Lily what The Hunger Games did for Jennifer Lawrence. “I’m so excited!” she said. “I had read and really loved the books. The fans [in Toronto, during filming] were amazing. They’d bring us cookies, mugs, tea, drawings, everything. I want to make sure I live up to their expectations as Clary.”

The “Next Big Thing” issue is on newsstands nationwide today and available digitally (iPad, Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook Color).
