Are You Prepared To Pay $50 For A Single Movie Ticket?

Is it just us, or have movie tickets gotten really, really expensive over the course of the last few years? About a decade ago, you could attend a movie—with a date or a friend—for less than $20 and, in some cases, way less than $20. Now? A ticket for a movie can run you up to $20 a piece, depending on whether or not the movie is in 3D with all of the extra bells and whistles. It’s gotten pretty ridiculous and it’s been enough to force us to skip more than a few movies. “We’ll just wait for it to come to Redbox and/or Netflix” is the motto these days when it comes to going to the movies. But now, movie ticket prices might be getting even more ridiculous.

How ridiculous? $50 per ticket ridiculous. That’s right, to help hype up the new Brad Pitt film, World War Z, Paramount Pictures and Regal Cinemas have teamed up to create special “mega tickets” for the movie that are available for those willing to shell out $50 for one. A “mega ticket” includes an advance screening of World War Z, a special pair of custom 3D glasses for the movie, a World War Z poster, and a digital download of World War Z on the day that it comes out on DVD. It’s not the craziest deal we’ve ever heard about, considering what you get for your money. But still, $50 to see a movie? A movie?!? Your parents and grandparents will think you’re an idiot for paying that kind of money.

All of that being said, something tells us this is only the beginning. After World War Z comes and goes, we’re sure some other studio out there will come up with another way to get people to pay a ton of money just to see a movie. With all the excitement surrounding movies on their release days, we wouldn’t be surprised at all to hear about studios coming up with more promotions like this to generate interest in their movies. It’s a lot of money to pay to sit and watch a film. But if people are willing to pay it, why not? Just don’t expect to catch us at one of these $50 films anytime soon.
