Check Out Prisoners, Hollywood’s Latest Take On Revenge
Hollywood (and its audience) has a thing for the revenge thriller. We’ve seen these themes over and over again in movies such as Taken and Law Abiding Citizen. Typically, a loved one (and in most cases, a daughter) is abducted and the father goes after her, willing to do whatever’s necessary to ensure her safe return.
Why the infatuation with these movies? Quite simply, it’s the best of both worlds. You’ve got the gut-wrenching, emotional scenes of loss and pain coupled with the high-octane damage and action of a blockbuster action film. Most importantly, no matter how violent it all gets, people can generally relate to getting down and dirty to ensure the return of a loved one.
Enter Prisoners, featuring an all-star cast led by Hugh Jackman and including Jake Gylenhaal, Terrence Howard, and Viola Davis. In it, a man loses his daughter and a friend of hers who get kidnapped while walking to a familiar home in their neighborhood.
Note to parents: DON’T LET KIDS THAT YOUNG WALK ANYWHERE BY THEMSELVES UNLESS YOU CAN SEE THEM! From there, of course, all hell breaks loose.
Based on its trailer, this revenge thriller seems to be a lot more psychological as opposed to the run-and-gun films we’ve come to associate with the subgenre. It looks as if it will deal with a very important phenomenon in our world – man’s ability to become the very people he fears (or hates) most when confronted by them.
For instance, check out the last few scenes from that trailer, then think about the title. Who are the prisoners in this movie? Is it the little girls? The suspected kidnapper? Or is it the father himself – changed, imprisoned, tormented… by fear?
Prisoners makes its way to theaters September 20.
