The adidas EQT Elevation “Draft Day Hornets” Was Almost Kobe Bryant’s First Signature Sneaker
Back in 1996, the Charlotte Hornets made one of the worst trades in the history of the NBA. After selecting Kobe Bryant No. 13 overall, the Hornets turned around and traded Kobe—yes, traded Kobe!—to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for center Vlade Divac. VLADE DIVAC! Sigh. Even now, almost 17 years later, we still can’t believe that the Hornets pulled the trigger on that trade. And truth be told, the team just hasn’t been the same since they decided to ship Kobe out of town. They could be a top tier team in the league right now! Instead, well, they’re not.
Anyway, if Kobe had stayed in Charlotte, the adidas EQT Elevation “Draft Day Hornets” sneaker that you see here likely would have been his first signature sneaker. You’ve never seen this sneaker before, because Kobe got traded away so quickly that adidas didn’t have time to create a signature shoe for him. But they took their time recently and crafted an EQT Elevation that features a teal and purple color scheme, faux snakeskin (an ode to the “Black Mamba”?), and the numbers 8 (Kobe’s original jersey number) and 13 (Kobe’s draft position) included on holograms. All in all, this is a pretty dope sneaker, especially when you consider that it was originally built more than a decade ago with different colors (Lakers colors!) in mind.
As of right now, adidas hasn’t revealed when they will release the EQT Elevation “Draft Day Hornets.” But with the 2013 NBA Draft right around the corner, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if adidas decided to drop these soon. When they do, will you be picking up a pair? Do you think Kobe—who is now signed to Nike—will find a way to cop a pair? And what do you think Hornets, er, Bobcats fans will think about them?
