Christian Bale Says He Absolutely Won’t Be In Justice League

Bad news, Dark Knight fans. Christian Bale, the Batman behind Christoper Nolan‘s three epic films in the franchise, has flatly stated this week that he will not be playing Batman in the Justice League film currently under development.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bale explained that both he and Nolan believed three Batman films was more than enough for their vision:

We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy… Chris [Nolan] always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.”

The EW article also explains that Bale’s involvement already seemed very unlikely: neither Bale nor Nolan had even shown eagerness to make a third film; and a screenwriter for both The Dark Knight and Man of Steel has stated that Justice League will take place in a different cinematic universe (with different actors and plot lines) that the Nolan films.

Justice League has been announced for a 2015 release, and is seen as DC Comics’s (and Warner Bros.’s) answer to The Avengers. In the comics, the Justice League is an alliance of the biggest names in the DC universe. Though it’s still unknown exactly which characters will be there, it seems unthinkable that either of the brand’s two biggest names (Batman and Superman) would be omitted.

Maybe this is for the best. Nolan’s Batman is a unique vision, and trying to stretch that out into a new plot line could be counterproductive. What do you think?
