Demi Lovato Confesses Her Childhood Bullies Still Haunt Her: “Last Night I Had Nightmares About It!”
Demi Lovato “comes clean” in the August issue of FASHION. Photographed by Chris Nicholls and styled by Zeina Esmail, The X-Factor judge wears a $995 dress by Just Cavalli, $455 earrings by Mawi, a $2250 necklace and a $195 ring both by Liza Shtromberg and looks absolutely priceless. After the glam photo shoot in Los Angeles’ Milk Studios, Demi also opened up about songwriting, sleepless nights and her once split personality.
“L.A. has opened my eyes,” she said. “I learned that ignorance stood in the way of my insight. I wasn’t really being honest with the way I used to live. I was pretending to be a role model during the day and turning into a wild child at night.”
Demi also learned to channel her frustrations into her songwriting. “Guys can be scandalous and not get any crap for it,” she told the magazine. “In my song [“Something We’re Not”], I’m saying, ‘girls, have your fun—don’t let anyone let you feel bad about your actions. Ever.’”
That’s a lesson that Demi still seems to struggle with today. A victim of childhood bullying, the “Heart Attack” singer is haunted by the mean girls of her past. “I could remember word for word what my bullies said to me,” she recalled. “Last night I had nightmares about it…just degrading things that hurt me and affected self-esteem. It affected the way I look at girls my age. I used to fear them.”
The 20-year-old is equally emotional as a judge on The X-Factor. “The show made me a tougher critic and better empathizer,” she said. “I understand artists a lot more now. I get scared for them because if they don’t make the right decisions right now or if they don’t have the right people around them, they could put their careers in danger. What they never show [on X-Factor] is me backstage crying with certain contestants. I had to walk off a couple of times, too, because it gets too emotional for me. They never showed that.”
