The Lakers Want Carmelo And LeBron In 2014, But Can They Get Them?

The Los Angeles Lakers may have missed out on Dwight Howard but they are already eyeballing the star-studded 2014 off-season for the opportunity to turn the franchise around and into a contender again. According to ESPN, the Lakers have their sights set on bringing both Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James to Hollywood.

Needless to say, a “Big 3″ of King James, Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant would easily make the Lakers the team to watch. It would also give Carmelo Anthony the opportunity to finally get the ring that will likely elude him as long as he’s with the Knicks. But can the Lakers realistically pull this off?

One source calls it “far-fetched at this point” while the other suggests that it is indeed “realistic.” Which basically means that nobody has a clue. All we do know is that the Lakers don’t plan on being a low playoff seed for more than one season.

The 2014 free agency class also features Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire, and Chris Bosh, all of who have early termination options on the five year deals they signed in 2010. Luol Deng, Danny Granger, Dirk Nowitzski, and Andrew Bogut will also be free agents.

The real issue is whether LeBron has any desire to join the Lakers or whether he will remain in Miami where he has already won two rings. One source spoke to ESPN and said, “Teams are doing more wishing than LeBron is wanting right now…It’s not about where LeBron wants to go [to win]. He already has two rings. If LeBron moved to Reno, teams would come to him.”

And that’s the reality of it. James will likely stray away from any free agency talk until the end of next season. Even with that, the Lakers are looking at a 2014 team that doesn’t have much to offer LeBron as most of the team, including Kobe Bryant, will be off the books. And, as we know, LeBron will be looking for the best opportunity. And right now, that’s the Miami Heat.
