Cleveland Kidnapper Ariel Castro Sentenced To Life Without Parole

Ariel Castro, the man who held and abused three young women in his home for a decade, was sentenced to life without parole plus 1,000 years in an Ohio courtroom yesterday. Despite pleading guilty, Castro showed no signs of remorse, saying he was sick and that the women made the ordeal sound worse than it was.

Before sentencing, the court was addressed by Michelle Knight, one of the young women chained, beaten, and raped over the course of almost eleven years. Knight told Castro that she will overcome what has happened, but that he “will face hell for eternity.”

Knight was the first woman abducted (in 2002), and was imprisoned the longest. Reports of the imprisonment also suggest she suffered the worst of the abuse. As a result of the rapes, Knight was impregnated five times, and beaten until she miscarried each time. She was later forced to safely deliver the baby of another woman under threat of death.

A trauma expert reported to the court that Knight even took on additional abuse to protect the others:

“At other times, she interceded when Castro sought to abuse Gina, interposing herself and absorbing physical and sexual trauma. But each survivor had a will to prevail and used that will to live through the ordeal.”

For his part, Catro claimed he was not a “monster,” but just “sick.” He also claimed he never “beat” or “tortured” the women.

In sentencing, the judge guaranteed Castro “will never be released from incarceration during the period of his remaining natural life for any reason.”
