Kelly Rowland may show off her dark side on the cover of the September 2013 issue of ESSENCE but the singer has finally found the light. The 32-year-old opens up about finding her inner strength and living life to her fullest in the in-depth interview.

“For a long time I wasn’t happy, but that had nothing to do with Beyoncé, The X-Factor judge reveals. “That had to do with me trying to get my life in order and make better decisions for myself. I’m seeing all these wonderful things happen for her and I am happy for her. But I want a path. I want things to pop off for me, too. Not on her level but whatever my level is supposed to be.”

Working with personal trainer Jeanette Jenkins has allowed Rowland to become stronger inside and out. “I see the beauty in boxing,” she says. “It teaches me strength, physically but mostly mentally. I had to learn my strength, because for so long I could have been tougher than I was.”

In the behind-the-scenes video from the shoot, the Rowland shows off her svelte figure and talks fashion. “I’m constantly inspired by fashion. But I don’t necessarily like to follow directions,” the Talk A Good Game singer said in the behind-the-scenes video. “I think that you should do whatever works for you, whatever works for your body type. You should wear the clothes, don’t let the clothes wear you. My red carpet style is definitely upped quite a bit but I definitely like to make sure that is does have a sensual quality to it. Your dress should be comfortable. I like to make sure that I’m happy. I’ve really been drawn to black a lot recently on the stage. I like a lot of things that kind of fit in the waist, and a lot of jackets… things that have a bit of bagginess to them.”
