Robin Thicke and Paula Patton seem like such a natural match for each other, so it’s hard to believe anyone ever had an issue with them as an interracial couple. Nevertheless, in a recent radio interview, the R&B crooner admitted that it wasn’t an easy road early on in their relationship. Surprisingly, Robin revealed that Paula did not take him to her prom because she didn’t want anyone knowing she was dating a white guy. He told Howard Stern:

“The funny thing is, in high school she didn’t take me to prom, her prom, because she didn’t want everyone to know she was with a white guy because she was president of the Black Student Union. I was a secret. She didn’t want to show up with a white guy. Funny right?”

Robin added that a lot has changed in the years since he was persona non grata at Paula’s prom, and the “Blurred Lines” singer credits current pop culture for the shift in people’s attitudes. He said:

“That was 20 years ago and I do believe that with music and a lot of the influences in movies and entertainment is normally the leader in changing some of these societal things. And I think that times are changing. The new generation doesn’t feel the same way as the last generation…It’s mostly the older people who have those thoughts.”

Robin and Paula were married in 2005, and welcomed their son, Julian Fuego Thicke, in 2010. Check out the video below to watch Robin’s interview with Howard Stern.
