Is Taco Bell’s Waffle Taco The New Breakfast Taco?

During a recent trip to Austin, Texas, I learned about the wonder that is the breakfast taco. Who knew that scrambled eggs, topped with everything else you might find in a taco- chorizo, salsa, guac, cheese, and anything else you want- would not only be as delicious as all of its component parts, but would work together so perfectly? Well, the residents of Austin, that’s who; there, tacos have long been understood to be part of a complete breakfast, and I’m not sure why the treat hasn’t spread (though Austinites are pretty protective- and secretive- about their unique culture).

So it was with very, very cautious optimism that I first reacted to the latest Frakenstein abomination from the food world: Taco Bell’s Waffle Taco, which is reportedly spreading this week from a few locations in Southern California to over a hundred throughout the US. As I had learned, the combination of savory breakfast food with hand-held tex-mex flavor can be a very good thing. At least, better than one gross pizza within another, different gross pizza.

Of course, it doesn’t seem like Taco Bell will be the one’s to provide this potential delicious mix. Back in May, Serious Eats’ Erin Jackson tried the new product, and said, “If they could, my taste buds would have called the cops.”

Jackson singled out for particular scorn the “bouncy, rubbery texture, sheen of grease, and lack of any discernible animal origin” of the sausage patty, saying even Taco Bell’s much-derided ground beef product would have been better.

However, Jackson did complement the fried waffle shell, saying it was “passably tasty,” and sort of like a churro.

Laugh all you want, but today in Taco Bell means tomorrow in a hip Williamsburg kitchen with much upgraded ingredients and preparation. Just imagine fluffy organic eggs, locally-sourced pork sausage, and housemade crema, all wrapped in a fried waffle dusted with cinnamon sugar and chipotle.

Of course, that does bring us one step closer to this.

What do you think of Taco Bell’s Waffle Taco?
