Are We Going To See Tim Tebow Playing Quarterback For The Patriots Tonight?

Later on tonight, the New England Patriots will kick off their 2013 preseason schedule by traveling to play against the Philadelphia Eagles in their first preseason game of the summer. And when they do, there is a very good chance that we could see Tim Tebow line up at quarterback for the Patriots. Although nothing has been confirmed by the team’s head coach Bill Belichick—no surprise there, right?—Tebow was reportedly told to “be ready” tonight. What exactly does that mean? Well, that’s anyone’s guess. For all we know, Belichick wants Tebow to “be ready” with a Gatorade and a clipboard every time Tom Brady calls a timeout tonight. But it sounds like we could see Tebow play some quarterback for New England.

“I don’t know,” Tebow said after practice yesterday. “It’s not something we’ve really talked about.”

So what have they talked about?

“Just be ready when your number is called,” Tebow said, echoing something Belichick told him in preparation for the game.

So will Tebow get his chance to prove himself as a worthy backup for Brady? We think he will. At the absolute very least, he should get some snaps during the first couple Patriots preseason games. Those snaps may come late in the games and may essentially be meaningless—this is the preseason, after all—but we think we will see Tebow at quarterback for a portion of the Patriots/Eagles game tonight. The Patriots would be foolish not to give him the chance to throw the ball around a little bit.

But we also wouldn’t be surprised to see Tebow line up in one or two other positions. Belichick and Patriots are not afraid to try new things, and Tebow will likely need to do more than just serve as a second or third-string quarterback if he wants to stay with the Patriots through the regular season. So it’ll be interesting to see which positions Tebow plays tonight. If nothing else, it’ll make the Patriots/Eagles game one of the few preseason games we’re actually interested in watching this weekend. Stay tuned to see what happens when Tebow takes the field.
