Is Star Trek Into Darkness That Bad? Trekkies Say It’s The Worst.

At an annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas last weekend, a panel and audience voted this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness as the worst film of the entire 12-movie franchise. The decision conflicts with the movie’s mainstream critical and commercial success, but highlights how poorly JJ Abrams‘ reboots are regarded in the Trekkie community.

Blogger Devin Faracci at Badass Digest reported the proceedings of the panel. STID seemed to be done in not only by fans’ dislike of the quality of the movie itself, but by the belief that it barely even counts as a Star Trek movie.

It was even outranked by Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, long thought to be the worst film of the series (it placed one spot ahead of STID). And coming in as a surprise at spot no. 7 was Galaxy Quest, essentially a  parody movie (and quite a good sci-fi comedy movie) that is not actually part of the Star Trek franchise.

First place, not surprisingly, went to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

It’s unclear why 2009′s Star Trek- the first of Abrams’ reboots-placed at no. 6, in the top half, considering STID was so poorly received. If this reviewer is any indication, it’s because Star Trek didn’t even try to be a Star Trek movie, while STID tried way too hard. (Personally, I’m with this academic and Trekkie who thought Star Trek was very stupid, and STID was pretty good.)

Abrams bowed out from future films to direct the new Star Wars sequels, always proclaiming himself to be a truer fan of that franchise anyway. But producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who penned both of Abrams’ Star Trek films, are already working on a third.

What do you think? Is Star Trek Into Darkness really that bad?
