Jennifer Hudson Channels Tiana, “The First Black Disney Princess,” From The Princess and the Frog
The 31-year-old rose from obscurity to instant fame as a finalist on the third season of American Idol (Fantasia won that season). Two years later, Hudson landed the lead role in DreamGirls opposite Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy and won the Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actress. Now, the Grammy Award-winning singer is fulfilling another dream by becoming a real-life princess.
Hudson recently channeled Tiana from the animated film The Princess and the Frog for Disney Parks’ Disney Dream Portrait series. “What made me want to be a part of this project is…[playing] the first black Disney princess!” Hudson says in the video below. “And also, I’m a Disney girl. My career kind of started with Disney, so it’s kind of seeing things come full circle. It’s showing what the Disney magic is all about. This experience is quite emotional for me, it means and it stands for so much. To be here and to be part of it and help bring the princess to life, the ‘Frog Princess’ that is, it really is a Disney dream. This really is every girl’s dream, and it’s a Disney dream come true.”
Shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz, Hudson joins the ranks of Taylor Swift, Jessica Biel, Will Ferrell, Julianne Moore, Jack Black, and Russell Brand, just to name a few of the stars who have portrayed Disney characters for the Disney Dream Portraits. But for Hudson, her character was especially close to her heart.
“I like what the ‘Frog Princess’ character stands for,” Hudson said. “She’s a hard worker. She’s a young girl with dreams and goals. And throughout her journey, you get to see her dreams manifest. Even at an early age, 17, 18 years old, [you see her] opening her little restaurant and being the little girl with dreams.”
