San Diego Mayor Filner Resigns, Remains Defiant

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner resigned on Friday, weeks after he was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women. The first Democrat in two decades to lead the city apologized for any hurt he caused, but maintained that he did nothing wrong, and was forced out by a “lynch mob” of “well-organized interests.”

Filner resigned after spending days striking a deal with the city councils. The mayor had insisted that the city pay his legal fees and any damages he is found to owe; the council agreed only if he would step down.

The city could face liability for allegedly not providing thorough anti-sexual harassment training to Filner.

As many as 18 women have accused Filner of groping or forcibly kissing them. He and the city are currently being sued by Irene McCormack Jackson, Filner’s former Director of Communications. The state attorney general’s office also confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway.

The resignation comes after weeks of drama. Initially, Filner refused to resign. He said he would return to work after completing a two-week intensive behavioral therapy program, but left after a week, saying he would continue with outpatient treatment. His chief of staff had reportedly changed the locks in the office by then.
