Russian artist Konstantin Altunin is reportedly seeking asylum in France after police confiscated several of his satirical works from a gallery in St. Petersburg. The paintings depicted several high-profile government and religious figures in provocative forms, including one showing President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dimitry Medvedev wearing lingerie and caressing each other.

The police did not say what laws the paintings violated, but there are several possibilities under Russian law. Russian statutes that could be invoked variously prohibit insulting state authorities, spreading “homosexual propaganda” to minors, and inciting religious or racial hatred.

Another painting portrayed the head of the Russian Orthodox Church covered in tattoos.

Russia has come under criticism from the international community recently for its anti-homosexuality laws, especially in light of the Olympic Games in Sochi next year. But anti-homosexual sentiment is pervasive throughout the country.

Artists have been forced to tread lightly or face consequences in Russia. Two members of the punk band Pussy Riot are currently serving two year prison sentences for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” after performing an anti-Putin song in a church.

What do you think of the painting?
