Is Mike Tyson In Some Serious Trouble Right Now?

For years now, Mike Tyson has been fighting a losing battle. Even though he was once one of the best heavyweight boxers in the world, Iron Mike has never been able to beat his never-ending battle with addiction. He’s struggled with addiction to both drugs and alcohol. And although he’s claimed to be sober in recent years, Tyson readily admits that fighting addiction is still a daily routine for him. And during an interview with the Today Show yesterday, he even admitted that he’s “on the verge of dying” right now because of his ongoing battle with alcoholism. He said that he needs help to get through it. And without help, he fears the worst may happen.

“When I start drinking and I relapse, I think of dying,” he said. “When I’m in a real dark mood, I think of dying. And I don’t want to be around no more. I won’t survive unless I get help.”

But does he want help? In the same interview with Matt Lauer, Tyson admitted that he doesn’t like dealing with a “normal” life, which is why he tends to revert back to drinking. He also said that he’s been sober for about two weeks now but doesn’t know if he’ll be able to keep it up.

“It’s a real challenge,” he said, “because I don’t know if I like this sober guy. It’s hard for me to live normal—straight is hard…I’m a king of the barbarians. There’s no one that could surpass me in the pain I’ve endured.”

So why doesn’t Tyson go and get the help he needs? It seems he’s tried. But he just can’t stay on the wagon. For his sake, though, we hope that he continues to try. We’ve admired Tyson both as an athlete and as a person for so many years now. So it’s hard for us to see him in this condition. We’ll be praying for you, Mike. And we hope you do everything that you need to do to find peace with yourself and your addictions.
