Author EL James tweeted out the identities of the leads in the film adaptation of her best selling trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey this morning, ending months of speculation. The protagonist Anastasia Steele will be played by relative newcomer Dakota Johnson, while her mysterious, billionaire, S&M-loving boyfriend Christian Grey will be played by Charlie Hunnam.

Johnson has appeared in smaller roles in films like The Social Network and The Five-Year Engagement. She did play the lead role of Kate in Fox’s short-lived series Ben and Kate.

Hunnam is best known for his role as Jax Teller in FX’s biker drama Sons of Anarchy. He also appeared in films like Cold Mountain and Children of Men, and starred in this summer’s Pacific Rim.

Sam Taylor-Wood (Nowhere Boy) was previously announced as the project’s director.

Casting rumors have been flying for months, including names like Emma Watson and Analeigh Tipton for Steele, and Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer for Grey. But at the same time, some potential actors might have been wary of the film’s racy subject matter and pulpy source material.

What do you think of Johnson and Hunnam? Whom would you have cast?

  • Cyndee Zientara says:

I think that Charlie Nunnam is an excellent selection for Christen Grey. While reading all 3 books, and currently re-reading them I
was picturing Charlie the entire time and WOW. He has done a number
of nude scenes on Sons and they were steamy. I can’t wait to see
this movie and how it will challenge Charlie’s acting ability to
be so dramatic. I’m not very familiar with Dakota Johnson. I hope she is up to the racy, hot sex scenes. HURRY UP AND RELEASE THIS MOVIE!!!!!
