Downton Abbey Debuts Trailer For New Season That I Won’t Watch

Downton Abbey unveiled a new trailer this week for their upcoming Series 4 (that’s “Season 4″ in British). And we can watch the trailer, even though the show is beyond redemption in the minds of many.

If there were anything truly attention-grabbing here, I might give the show a final chance. But there didn’t seem to be anything particularly interesting. Lady Mary starts to get over her heartbreak, and gets a new boyfriend, because… the show wouldn’t exist without her personal drama. And that random cousin becomes a regular, because they need a new cute girl.

Oh, and there’s a black guy. The actor’s name is Gary Carr, and he plays jazz singer Jack Ross. Downton was in a tough spot when it comes to diversity: introducing new characters can try to show the outside world progressing on this very homogenous- even slightly incestuous- family, but it smacks of gimmickry. Ross is clearly going to become entangled with the pretty young cousin, and I have a feeling that won’t sit so well with Lord Grantham.

Downton ended last season with a twist that was not only unpopular, but as I pointed out, just wasn’t well conceived. And that shocker capped off two sometimes great, but very uneven, seasons. The show almost lost me with the “scarred amnesiac long-lost cousin,” and it can only have so many second chances.

What do you think? Are you still excited for the new season?
