At just 24 years old, Vanessa Hudgens is one of the most recognizable young actresses on the planet. Still, the Spring Breakers actress, who rose to fame on the popular Disney series High School Musical, still has a lot that she is hoping to accomplish in the future: “A vintage Mustang, kids, and an Oscar,” to be exact!

In the October 2013 issue of Marie Claire, Hudgens opens up about her road to the top of the Hollywood A-list and dealing with the haters that hope to knock her down. “My parents gave up so much,” she says of the sacrifices her family made to help her achieve her dreams.  “Money was a big thing. My parents drove me up to L.A., which cost a lot because of gas, and took out loans so that we could move from location to location to be close to L.A. The family definitely struggled. They were very supportive of me. They gave up a lot so that I could get to where I am.”

It’s that strong foundation of family that keeps Vanessa grounded now that she has become a household name. “A sense of knowing I’m part of something bigger than myself has allowed me to enjoy life more,” she says. “And not worry about the little things. Like paparazzi.”
Even when nude images of the actress leaked online during her relationship Zac Ephron in 2009, Hudgens says she was able to take the whole thing in stride.
“I am human like everyone else,” she confessed. “I am aware that there are people who look up to me. When mistakes are made, they aren’t intentional, and I constantly push myself to be a better person. I’m so comfortable with myself—honing in on what I love and what makes me powerful. Things I’ve been doing lately, I’m super proud of. So I don’t really care if someone doesn’t like it, because I love it. You have a choice whether you want to be happy or not. I choose to be happy. And it’s been working out pretty well.”
