With The iPhone 5S Dropping, Amazon Announces That It Will Not Be Releasing Its Own Smartphone
All anyone wants to talk about right now is the new Apple iPhone 5S. And we really can’t blame them. Apple has turned their smartphone releases into an event designed to add a lot of hype to their smartphones. So if you’re talking about the iPhone 5S right now, Apple has done its job. But some people are also talking about another smartphone right now—a smartphone that is reportedly going to be released by Amazon sometime in the near future. A recent Wall Street Journal report even indicated that the Amazon smatphone will be out by the end of 2013—and will be free! Can you imagine how much hype would surround that phone?
Unfortunately for those people who are not interested in the iPhone 5S, that WSJ report was false. Although Amazon hasn’t shut down the idea of releasing a smartphone sometime in the near future, they have discredited the WSJ report and revealed that there won’t be an Amazon smartphone coming out anytime soon. And if one does come out sometime in the future, it won’t be free.
“We have no plans to offer a phone this year,” Amazon said through a statement released earlier this week. “And if we were to launch a phone in the future, it would not be free.”
Boo! No free smartphone for us. Sad face. Then again, we can’t say that we’re surprised. The end of 2013 would not be an ideal time for Amazon to drop a smartphone, as the iPhone 5S will likely be sweeping the nation. But we wouldn’t put it past Amazon to drop a smartphone at the top of 2014 or sometime next year. We’re not sure how much interest it will generate—unless it does turn out to be free!—but it wouldn’t be a bad idea for Amazon to throw their hat into the smartphone ring. We’ll just have to keep an eye out for them and see what the company ultimately decides to do when it comes to their rumored smartphone.
