Marc Jacobs Designs A Makeup Line For Men: “Boy Tested, Girl Approved!”
Marc Jacobs doesn’t think girls should have all the fun! So when it was time for the critically-acclaimed fashion designer to create a cosmetics line in collaboration with Sephora, Jacobs decided to concoct a men’s makeup range that would be unisex.
“I personally tested all the products,” the New York-based designer behind Louis Vuitton exclaims on his website regarding the Marc Jacobs Beauty brand. “Witness my brow and my luscious lips.”
The line, which includes mascara, eyeshadow, nail polish, blush, and lip gel, isn’t entirely meant to be shared between men and women.
“I believe that anything can be for men or women,” Jacobs said in an interview with New York Magazine. “I mean, I’ve worn a lace dress before! So we decided that three of the products were unisex—the lip balm, the brow mousse, and the Remedy concealer. But I also think the eyeliner is unisex, and same with the nail polish. I’ve worn a few colors of the nail polish the last couple of weeks. We live in a world where I see guys walking around with makeup, and girls walking around in boys’ clothes. All that matters is that you’re happy. I always loved that image of a girl putting toenail polish on a guy—her boyfriend, or something like that. Or a guy waking up in the morning and reaching over and putting on his girlfriend’s shirt. Like Courtney Love putting nail polish on Kurt Cobain. To me, I have references to those moments, and I always find them really dear and true and honest and charming.”
In the video below, Jacobs reveals the three products he cannot live without.
“There’s the Remedy concealer that has a really lovely palladium tip that really feels nice and cool to your undereye area, and God knows I can always use a bit of Remedy Concealer myself,” he explains. “Then there’s the brow tamer which has a lovely soft application wand and the formula itself is soft and smooth feeling rather than sticky and gooey or hard. [Finally] there’s the Liplock which has a nice minty fresh taste. It’s very important to have a nice moist lip so you’re always ready to kiss and make out with that right person.”
With Tom Ford launching a similar range of male products next month, clearly men’s makeup is on the rise. Watch Marc mark himself up below. Do you think boys should wear blush?
