Shailene Woodley Confesses Her “Alternative Lifestyle” To Flaunt: “I Make My Own Toothpaste.”
The Spectacular Now star Shailene Woodley isn’t into living a spectacular lifestyle. In the new issue of Flaunt, the 21-year-old actress opened up about her unconventional way of living.
“I think everything about my lifestyle is fairly alternative. I gather my own spring water from mountains every month,” she told the mag. “I go to a farm to get my food. I make everything, from my own toothpaste to my own body lotions and face oils. I could go on for hours. I make my own medicines; I don’t get those from doctors. I make my own cheese and forage wild foods and identify wild plants. It’s an entire lifestyle. It’s appealing to my soul.”
The Golden Globe-nominated actress is set to star in the highly anticipated thriller Divergent, the film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s hit novel about a futuristic society in Chicago that is divided into five factions, each one meant to uphold a particular virtue of humanity: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent).
“Sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior (Woodley) was born into an Abnegation family, but selflessness has never come naturally to her like it does her brother Caleb,” reads the film’s synopsis. “She feels lonely and constricted by her environment and feels like she doesn’t belong. When the time comes for Beatrice to take her aptitude test, the results are inconclusive: she doesn’t fit neatly into any one faction; rather, she shows equal aptitude for three—Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. This makes her ‘divergent’ and she is warned never to share this information with anyone for fear of her life.”
The film promises to be as popular as the Twilight and The Hunger Games film franchises but Woodley originally turned down the role of Beatrice for fear of the fame the movies would bring.
“I just find the whole f word, this whole ‘fan’ word, so completely fascinating. I think it’s one thing to be a fan of a particular movie—growing up, I was a huge fan of The Goonies and certain bands or musicians. [But] I look back at my favorite childhood films, and I don’t remember being obsessed, or necessarily being a fan of a particular actor. I was excited to see what they were going to do next, but… Now I feel like there’s this odd sort of obsession with certain people,” she said. “So, for me, I try to separate myself from my project; and I hope that people support that project. But when people are solely supporting me, it feels odd; it’s something that I haven’t quite gotten used to and I don’t think I ever will.”
