Reebok Just Agreed To A Sneaker Deal With Philadelphia 76ers Rookie Nerlens Noel

Last week, adidas announced the names of a handful of NBA rookies that they just signed to sneaker endorsement deals. Yesterday, Reebok did the same thing. But their list is much, much, much shorter than the one adidas released. In fact, it only includes one player. That player? Philadelphia 76ers rookie center Nerlens Noel. It’s the biggest signing for Reebok since they signed John Wall to a deal a few years back. And it’s proof that Reebok has not given up on the idea of creating signature sneakers for current players. They’re not going to create one for Noel right away—instead, he’ll wear mostly older Reebok signature sneakers as well as fresh takes on those older sneakers—but we could see it happening sometime down the line.

“I don’t think I’m just a prototypical big man,” Noel told SLAM during an interview on Friday. “I think I’ll be able to sell shoes…What they really want to do is bring it back to retro.”

That’s something that Reebok has clearly been trying to do in recent months, as they’ve gone hard with their retro releases like the Reebok Shaqnosis and Reebok Question. And in that regard, we think that Noel is a great pick-up for Reebok. Big men don’t typically sell very many sneakers. But if Noel makes a habit out of wearing Shaq’s old signature sneakers as well as sneakers like Allen Iverson‘s Question (hey, he is playing in Philly, right?!), then we think he’ll be a wonderful addition to the Reebok team. And who knows? If things go well, maybe he will get his own signature sneaker sometime down the line.

What do you think about Reebok signing Noel? Do you think he will fit in with what Reebok is trying to do right now—or do you think they should have opted to sign a different NBA rookie for the upcoming season? Let us know in the comments section below.
