Are The Kansas City Chiefs For Real This Season?

This happens just about every single year in the NFL, doesn’t it? Some team that finished in last place the year before comes out of nowhere and is suddenly a pretty solid squad. It’s part of what makes the NFL so great. With the right mix of players, any team from any city can have a great season. And this year, it looks like the Kansas City Chiefs are going to be the team that shocks the world and puts together a solid 2013-14 campaign. They’re off to a 3-0 start right now—having beaten the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Philadelphia Eagles—and it appears as though they’re destined to do some pretty great things this year.

Or are they? While teams that get off to a hot start are more likely than those who don’t to make the playoffs, you don’t win anything for starting an NFL season off 3-0. So should we really buy into the Chiefs right now and put them on a pedestal? Or are they just pretenders who are going to fall apart midway through the season?

At this point in time, we think that the Chiefs are for real. While they don’t have the flashiest quarterback in the league—Alex Smith is serviceable but he’s not going to blow anyone away with his passing abilities—they have a lot of other pieces that make us feel good about their chances to put together a nice season this year. They’ve got a couple of solid wide receivers in Dwayne Bowe and Donnie Avery. They’ve got an elite running back in Jamaal Charles. And most importantly, they’ve got what appears to be a pretty stingy defense filled with guys who can rush the quarterback and provide good coverage downfield. So we think that they might be the real deal. It’s been a long time coming, but we think the Chiefs are going to have a great season under first-year head coach Andy Reid.

Maybe we’re wrong. Maybe the Chiefs will lose their next three games and then finish the year 8-8. But in a relatively weak AFC, we think they could also be one of the top two or three teams in the conference. Either way, they’re one of the NFL teams that we’ll definitely have on our radar this year.
