Transgender Teen Cassidy Lynn Campbell Crowned High School Homecoming Queen

Like many teenage girls, Cassidy Lynn Campbell had a lifelong dream of becoming homecoming queen. And like many girls, when the day came and she actually won the crown, she looked at her adoring classmates as she wept and smiled. But unlike most homecoming queens, Cassidy was born a boy.

The 16-year-old, who was born Lance Campbell, hopes that her win will help to erase the stigma of living as a transgender teen. “I wasn’t doing this for me,” said Campbell who lived as a boy until 2010. “I was doing this for so many others around the nation. They think that I’m just a boy doing this for fun, and I’m just a boy dressing up as a girl and trying to win a crown when that is completely the opposite of what it is. I’ve always seen myself as a girl. This was for every misunderstood child affected by ignorance.”

But less than a day after becoming the first transgender homecoming queen at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, Calif. on Friday, September 20, Cassidy’s tears of joy turned to tears of sadness as negative comments flooded her YouTube channel. “I can never have something good happen to me and people just be happy for me—never,” the teen said sobbing in the video below. “I’m always judged and I’m always looked down upon. I don’t understand why people have to be so ignorant and don’t understand. I am a girl and I’ve always felt like a girl ever since I was a baby.”

Still wearing her sash and tiara, Cassidy wondered if her struggle would even matter during her teary video. “Sometimes I wonder is it even worth it, and if I should go back to being miserable and be a boy and hate myself and hate my life, just so everyone can just shut up and leave me alone. I’m so sad and so distraught and so broken down and so upset and so deteriorated and so tired of the world,” she said. “I’m tired of life. And I know I need to be strong for the kids that I did this for and people I did this for, but I can’t right now.”
