Is Drake Going To Help Turn Around The Toronto Raptors?

The Toronto Raptors suddenly just became very, very relevant in NBA circles. They didn’t do it by signing a new player, making a big trade, or moving into a state-of-the-art arena, though. Rather, they did it by naming Drake their new Global Ambassador and partnering up with him to announce that the 2016 NBA All-Star Game will be held in Toronto. And the hope is that now that Drake is running with the Raptors, they will be relevant for many years to come and, eventually, make some serious noise for what they’re doing on the basketball court.

But will Drake actually be able to make the Raptors one of the best teams in the NBA? Or is his new position with the team just window dressing for a team that’s going to remain in the middle of the pack in the NBA? It could really go either way. In the near future, we don’t see much changing with the Raptors. They don’t have enough talent on their roster to compete with the big boys in the NBA. But over the next few years, with some help from Drake, the Raptors could become a more attractive option for free agents. They’re not going to attract the likes of LeBron James to come to Canada. But there are plenty of young guys in the NBA who look up to and love Drake. So his mere presence within the Raptors organization means that they’ll probably be more willing to at least give Toronto a look when it comes to deciding who to sign with.

But regardless of how Drake’s association with the Raptors helps or hurts the team, his partnership with the organization will be an interesting case study. If he does end up having a positive impact, how many other NBA teams—and pro sports teams as a whole—will bring celebrities into the mix to try and entice players to come to their franchises? We’re guessing a whole bunch. So in that way, Drake’s position with the Raptors could end up changing the game dramatically and altering the way pro sports teams do business. It all depends on how Drake is able to influence the culture of the NBA.

How do you think Drake will help or hurt the Toronto Raptors? Let us know in the comments section below.
