Rihanna On Her Style Icons: “Nicole Richie Pisses Me Off She’s So Good. Princess Diana Killed It!”
Rihanna is no rude gyal. The Barbadian beauty may be one of the biggest style icons on the planet, but in the November issue of Glamour magazine, the 25-year-old was quick to bestow compliments on the women that inspire her fashion choices.
“Oh my God, are you kidding me? Nicole Richie. She just pisses me off, she’s so good,” Rihanna says of Richie’s style. “But you know who is the best who ever did it? Princess Diana. She was like—she killed it. Every look was right. She was gangsta with her clothes. She had these crazy hats. She got oversize jackets. I loved everything she wore.”
Princess Diana may be royalty, but no one has influenced Rihanna’s closet more than her mother who still reigns supreme in the singer’s eyes. “My love for fashion—let me say, my admiration for fashion—started with my mom,” Ri-Ri explains. ” I used to watch her get dressed. She was around my age right now, and she was so fly. So fly. I remember not even knowing how to do that because I was such a tomboy.”
Rihanna hopes to flex her style chops on her new show Styled To Rock. “I felt like there were all these talented people in New York who had a very keen eye for style and design, but I couldn’t find them [to work with],” she says of putting together the new series, which is coming to the Style network this November. “I get excited by discovering new designers. I’m obsessed with being first with everything in fashion.”
These days, being a fashion daredevil is something that comes easy to Rihanna. But that fearlessness was not always present. “I had to regain my fearlessness because it did go away for a little bit,” Rihanna confessed. “My mother said something to me a few years ago: ‘I’ve seen something in your eyes I’ve never seen before: fear.’ She was like, ‘No, this is not you.’ I just got back to being OK with myself.”
