Should President Obama Force The Washington Redskins To Change Their Team Name?

For years now, sports fans have debated over whether or not the Washington Redskins should change their team name. A lot of them feel as though the term “Redskins” is offensive and want Washington to change their name to something different. However, others argue that the team name is steeped in tradition, which is why the Redskins should keep their name. And in the end, the Redskins owner Dan Snyder has vowed to keep the name “Redskins” intact, regardless of what anyone thinks. It has led to many, many, many arguments, especially in recent years. But now, one very prominent sports fan is weighing in on the debate—and it could result in some change.

President Obama did an interview with the Associated Press recently, and he revealed that he thinks the Redskins name offends “a sizable group of people.” He also said that while he understands why many Redskins fans want their team to keep their current name, he doesn’t think that tradition is a valid reason for them to do it.

“I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things,” he said.

But unfortunately, there isn’t anything President Obama can do about it. Because he doesn’t own the Redskins—and because he doesn’t own any NFL team—the President’s opinion on the Redskins’ name is worth the same as your opinion on it. It’s not going to have any direct effect on whether or not the Redskins eventually change their name. However, President Obama will help bring this particular topic into the national spotlight by talking about it. And that could eventually spark some change. We’ll just have to keep an eye on it and see if Dan Snyder ever decides to change his mind about his team’s name.

What do you think? Should the Redskins change their team name because it’s seen as offensive by some people? Or do you think the Redskins should keep their name because of the tradition behind it? Let us know in the comments section below.
