First Ads For Samsung Galaxy Gear Play Off Nostalgia, TV And Movies

The first ads for the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch address one of the device’s most joked-about features: its resemblance to devices from science fiction. Two commercials highlight similar wrist-worn communication devices in everything from Dick Tracy to Night Rider to Might Morphin’ Power Rangers.

One commercial features models of the devices themselves, with title cards reading, “After all these years/It’s finally real.”

Another edited together actual clips from all of the TV shows and movies featuring the wrist-phones in action.

Some very clever creative exec- or even the researcher who had to find all these clips- must have realized how many of them contain the line, “I’m on my way,” leading to a fitting appearance for the Galaxy Gear at the end.

Samsung successfully made itself first out of the gate in the smart watch race, which (along with wearable technology in general) is expected to be a major new device category. Apple is reportedly working on an iWatch, and Sony has a similar device almost out.

But it remains to be seen how well any of these will perform, and if anyone will want to make a phone call on their wrist. The Galaxy Gear is already being criticized for requiring a separate Galaxy smart phone to function.
