Is It Time To Start Taking The New York Jets Seriously?

Prior to the start of the 2013-14 NFL season, most people didn’t expect much from the New York Jets. In fact, if we remember correctly, most people didn’t expect anything from the Jets. Their rookie quarterback Geno Smith was ranked at the bottom of most NFL quarterback rankings. Their defense was suspect at best. And the lack of star power on the team was seen as something that was going to hold them back this season and, ultimately, get their head coach Rex Ryan fired at the end of the year. But a funny thing has happened through the first quarter of the NFL season—the Jets have played well!

It’s a surprise, for sure, and something that no one saw coming. But is it time for everyone to start taking the Jets seriously? Eh, that still remains to be seen. Ryan does have the Jets playing out of their minds right now—they beat the Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta last night on Monday Night Football—but the problem is that they’ve beaten a number of bad teams to get to where they’re at this season. From the Buffalo Bills to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Falcons, the Jets have wins against teams that are below .500 on the season so far. And they’ve lost to the New England Patriots and the Tennessee Titans, teams that have played well this season. So Jets fans shouldn’t go too overboard just yet. There’s a lot of season left.

But as of right now, we have to admit that we are pleasantly surprised by what we have seen from the Jets. Smith is growing as a quarterback and, while he still makes his fair share of rookie mistakes, he looks like a guy who is growing every week. The defense has been even more impressive. They aren’t allowing many big runs and have been able to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. So we wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets continue to enjoy success on the football field this season. Does that mean Jets fans should start planning playoff parties? Not quite. But we realize now that everyone underestimated the Jets before the season. And if nothing else, they should hang around and be a playoff contender this season, which is way more than we expected from them just a few short weeks ago.
