October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On October 5 at Wingate Park Brooklyn, NY, the Face My Abuse Organization brought out celebrity guest speakers who have survived domestic violence. Event organizer Jackie Rowe, a survivor of domestic violence herself, felt compelled to help other victims face their abuse.

Face My Abuse featured speakers such as Erica Mena of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop, Carol Maraj of the Carol Maraj Foundation and mother to pop-star Nicki Minaj, author Teri Woods, NYC Council Member Jumaane D. Williams, DMX ex-wife Tashera Simmons, and many more.

Most notably, Erica Mena of Love & Hip-Hop spoke in great detail about her harrowing ordeal. She described trivial everyday issues that would escalate into intense physical altercations. As with most abuse victims, Erica felt trapped in her circumstance, but did not know how to get out. Finally, with the help of her son, Erica got enough strength to leave. Reaching out to family for help, Erica escaped her abuser, never to return.

All of the domestic violence survivors shared their tragic past, and educated victims on how to seek help. After the speakers where done, all of the attendees were given purple and white balloons, which they then released into the air simultaneously as a gesture of relief and strength.

This awe-inspiring event brought camaraderie among the speakers as well as the many attendees. Given the strong reception of the Face My Abuse event, Ms. Rowe plans to make this an annual occurrence and continue to raise awareness.
