Thor Star Tom Hiddleston Interviews Natalie Portman For Elle UK: “She Punched Me In The Face!”

Natalie Portman is tougher than she looks.

The 32-year-old actress and star of the upcoming film Thor: The Dark World may look gorgeous on the cover of ELLE UK‘s November 2013 issue in head-to-toe Versace. But as evidenced by Thor costar Tom Hiddleston, the actress knows how defend her honor. Hiddleston sat down to interview Portman for the glossy mag and described their initial meeting.

“Natalie has a neat right hook,” Hiddleston recalls. “I know this because the first time we shared screen time, she punched me in the face. She bursts out laughing when I remind her of this over dinner.”

Natalie’s take: Oh my god: it was so good!”

Thankfully Portman didn’t pull any punches during the fun feature and she opened up about being a mother in Hollywood.
“I love being a mum, but it’s much more intensive work than being an actress,” she said of raising her two-year-old son Aleph. “Going to work feels like you’ve got a day off. Not that I want a day off from being a mum, it’s just perhaps I had this impression before that mums don’t work. But they work more than anyone.”

As a self-proclaimed feminist, Portman covets being able to balance motherhood with Hollywood, but she hopes that films will also continue to tell complex stories and multifaceted characters. “I want every version of a woman and a man to be possible,” she argues. “I want women and men to be able to be full-time parents or full-time working people or any combination of the two. I want both to be able to do whatever they want sexually without being called names. I want them to be allowed to be weak and strong and happy and sad—human, basically. The fallacy in Hollywood is that if you’re making a ‘feminist’ story, the woman kicks ass and wins. That’s not feminist, that’s macho. A movie about a weak, vulnerable woman can be feminist if it shows a real person that we can empathize with.”
