Were You Upset About How Yasiel Puig Flipped His Bat After Hitting What Appeared To Be A Home Run Last Night?

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig thought he had just broken out of a devastating slump by hitting a home run. During the fourth inning of last night’s Game 3 of the NLCS between the Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals, Puig hit a ball and thought that it was long gone. So he flipped his bat about 25 feet, raised his hands, threw his index finger up, and started his home run trot. But there was one problem: The ball didn’t leave the park. Instead, it hit the outfield wall, and Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran retrieved it and threw it back towards the infield. Puig started hustling and ended up on third base with a triple. But his reaction to what appeared to be a home run ruffled a lot of feathers and got some people out there, including Beltran, upset.

“As a player, I just think he doesn’t know [how to act],” Beltran said after the game. “That’s what I think. He really doesn’t know. He must think that he’s still playing somewhere else. He has a lot of passion, no doubt about that—great ability, great talent. I think with time, he’ll learn that you’ve got to act with a little bit more calm.”

Was Puig really so far out of line that he deserved to be called out for it, though? Baseball is a lot different than most other sports in that blatant grandstanding or showing off is frowned upon. But during a big playoff game, does anyone really expect Puig to tone down his act? He has been an emotional player all year long and really seems to thrive off the energy that he brings to the ballpark. So we weren’t offended at all by his behavior last night. If it had affected his team in some way or changed the course of the game in a negative way, then he definitely would have deserved to be ridiculed for flipping his bat and carrying on. But from where we were sitting, he actually helped propel his team to a win. So why is everyone so bent out of shape about it?
