T-Mobile To Offer New iPads With Free Data, No Money Down

T-Mobile is taking its “Uncarrier” effort to the iPad. The upstart major carrier announced yesterday that it will make both new devices- the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display- available for no money down, and with 200MB of data a month included “for life.”

This is the first time T-Mobile has offered coverage for iPads. The iPad Air will be available for 24 monthly payments of $26.25, or $630 total, which is the unsubsidized retail price of the device.

By contrast, smartphone customers often end up paying more over time through subsidized plans that cover both handset and service.

The iPad Mini with Retina Display will be available for $22.08 a month (about $530) for 24 months.

During a conference call yesterday, CEO John Legere guaranteed that, as with their other plans, customers will not be hit with overages for exceeding the 200MB. They will instead be presented with plans to purchase more data.

If there’s one catch, it’s that the “no money down” was described as an “introductory offer,” meaning it might not stick around forever.

Legere said he believed that concerns and uncertainty over data charges, not upfront cost, are the reason that only 12% of US tablets have a data plan.

In an effort to shake up the conventions of the major carriers (of which T-Mobile has long been the smallest), the company has introduced a series of reforms recently in its Uncarrier initiative. It began by essentially eliminating the two-year contract, and then introducing “Next” to allow for faster upgrades to new phones. Recently, the company announced that phones on many plans would have free international roaming.

Tablets on the T-Mobile network will also reportedly have free international roaming, at lower 2G speeds.
