Julianne Hough is dancing with disaster.

The former Dancing with the Stars star is known for her graceful moves on the ballroom floor. But the 25-year-old misstepped when she attended the Casamigos Tequila Halloween party in Hollywood, California in blackface. The Rock of Ages star was dressed up as “Crazy Eyes,” a popular character played by Uzo Aduba from the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black.

“Orange is the new Black!” Julianne’s brother Derek Hough wrote on Instagram next to a shot of Julianne and her friends dressed in prison jumpsuits as the cast of the popular series. “Genius costumes. Love how much they commit and have fun with a show they love. #womanunit.”

Photos of Hough in her controversial costume quickly hit the web and caused outrage in the black community. “The current racial tensions in the United States require careful reflection as we relate to each other. If her behavior is a political statement, she should explain that,” Joan Duvall-Flynn, President of the Media Area Unit of NAACP of Pennsylvania, told FOX411. “If her behavior is an act of impulsive insensitivity, she needs, as a public figure, to be more responsible. And, an apology for such insensitivity is appropriate.”

Realizing her mistake, Hough quickly took to Twitter to apologize. “I am a huge fan of the show ‘Orange is the New Black,’ actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created,” Hough tweeted. “It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.”
