5 Storylines That We’re Going To Be Following Closely During The 2013-14 NBA Season

The NBA is finally back! Actually, er, it kinda, sorta feels like the 2012-13 NBA season just ended. So we shouldn’t really use the word “finally” here. But you know what? We’re not complaining about it being back so soon! We will gladly take one more professional sport thrown into the mix, especially since the Major League Baseball season will be over within the next few days.

The 2013-14 NBA season is looking forward to being a real doozy, too. From the return of Derrick Rose to the interest surrounding the Houston Rockets, there are a number of interesting storylines that we are looking forward to following this season. So with the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat and Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers set to tip off tonight, we thought we would take a closer look at some of the storylines that we will be foloowing extra closely this season. Who else is looking forward to these?

Storyline #1: Will the Miami Heat be able to three-peat?

The Heat have won the last two NBA Finals, and they’re the favorites to win their third straight title this season. But they’re going to face some stiff competition from the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference. So it will be interesting to see if LeBron James & Co. can, in fact, pull off the three-peat next June.

Storyline #2: Can Derrick Rose stay healthy?

D-Rose says that he feels better than he has in a long time after sitting out all of last year with an ACL injury. But is he going to be able to last for an entire season this year? We sure hope so. We also hope that he’s really faster than he was before his ACL injury, which is what he claims. If he is, he’s going to once again be one of the most exciting players in the league.

Storyline #3: Do the Oklahoma City Thunder have what it takes to return to the NBA Finals?

Unfortunately, the Thunder are going to be without their star point guard Russell Westbrook for the start of the season because of a knee injury. And he probably won’t be at full strength for the better part of the year. But they obviously still have Kevin Durant on their roster, which gives them an advantage over just about everyone in the Western Conference. Will he be enough, though? Can he single-handedly guide them to a title? That’s still up for debate.

Storyline #4: Are the Houston Rockets going to be the best team in the Western Conference during the regular season?

Now that they have Dwight Howard on their roster, the Rockets are going to be a tough out when the 2013 NBA Playoffs start. Even without Howard, James Harden was enough of a stud on the court to make them a difficult team to beat. They could very easily make a run to the NBA Finals this season. In fact, we would almost be surprised if they didn’t. This is going to be a fun team to watch.

Storyline #5: Do the Brooklyn Nets have what it takes to win a championship this year?

The Nets went all in this summer when they orchestrated a trade for both Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. But are those the missing pieces that the Nets need to make a title run? If they can both stay healthy, we think they have a legit chance to upset the Heat in the playoffs. But because both Pierce and Garnett are getting older, they’re not the favorite. So we can’t wait to see what this season brings for them and all of the other teams in the NBA.
