Is It Realistic To Think That The New York Knicks Can Win An NBA Championship This Season?
New York Knicks owner James Dolan wants his team to win an NBA title this season. Er, make that he expects them to win an NBA title this season. He hasn’t gone on the record yet and said that. But according to multiple sources within the Knicks organization, Dolan held a meeting with Knicks coaches and staff recently and told them that he thinks the Knicks have all the pieces in place to win a championship this season.
“He told them he believes they have enough talent to win it all,” one source said, “and he expects it to happen this year.”
This year? This year? With all due respect, Mr. Dolan, HAVE YOU LOST YOUR $^%&*#@ MIND?! We understand wanting to win the NBA title this year. We even understand thinking you have a chance to win an NBA title this year. But if Dolan is expecting a title, he’s going to be very disappointed at the end of the year when the Knicks come up short. Because while the Knicks are a talented bunch and have a lot of the pieces necessary to contend for a high playoff seed and make a decent run in the playoffs, the truth is that the Knicks are not better than the Miami Heat, the Chicago Bulls, the Brooklyn Nets, or the Indiana Pacers right now. That means that, in all likelihood, they will have to play either the Bulls, Nets, or Pacers in the first round of the playoffs and then, if they’re lucky enough to win that series, the Heat in the second round. So we just don’t see a championship in their immediate future.
Does that mean that Dolan should give up hope and stop pushing the Knicks to be the best team in the league? Absolutely not. It’s his team and, if that’s what he wants to do, more power to him. But expecting a title this year is just silly. Unfortunately, the Knicks don’t have enough manpower yet to win it.
