Fantasia Barrino Shines In After Midnight
Fantasia Barrino is back on the Great White Way in After Midnight, which opened on Sunday night at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The musical extravaganza is the American Idol alum’s first time back on Broadway since her triumphant run in the role of Celie in the Broadway adaptation of The Color Purple.
After Midnight celebrates Duke Ellington‘s years at the Cotton Club, using original arrangements performed by a world-class big band of 17 musicians hand-picked by living jazz legend Wynton Marsalis. Along with Fantasia, the show features actor Dulé Hill in the role of “The Host”, who guides the audience through one fantastically choreographed scene to the next using poetry by Langston Hughes. The 90 minute presentation is candy for the eyes and ears, and will have you clapping your hands, stomping your feet, and singing along to the music, no matter how tone deaf you may be.
Continuing in the tradition of the Cotton Club’s “Celebrity Nights”, After Midnight will present stars of today in limited engagement appearances throughout its run. Beginning with Fantasia, the show will feature k.d. lang from February 9 to March 9, and Toni Braxton and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds from March 18 to March 30. I suggest you not miss out on such a sexy, heart-pounding new musical…I may go see the show again myself. It’s THAT entertaining!!
